Break the cycle of obsessions and compulsions

OCD is not a personality quirk; it is a distressing cycle of intrusive thoughts and repetitive behaviors. Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is the gold standard for treatment.

Understanding the OCD Cycle

OCD consists of Obsessions (unwanted, intrusive thoughts, images, or urges that cause distress) and Compulsions (repetitive behaviors or mental acts performed to reduce that distress).

Compulsions work in the short term—they lower anxiety temporarily. But they reinforce the fear in the long term, making the obsession come back stronger.

How we treat it: ERP

We use Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP). This involves facing your fears (Exposure) without engaging in the compulsive behavior (Response Prevention).

Why ERP?

ERP teaches your brain that you can handle the distress without performing the ritual. Over time, the anxiety naturally decreases (habituation).
  • Assessment: Mapping out your specific triggers and rituals.
  • Hierarchy Building: creating a ranked list of fears from least to most difficult.
  • Gradual Exposure: Systematically working through your hierarchy.
  • Maintenance: Skills to prevent relapse.

Common OCD Themes

  • Contamination / Washing
  • Checking (locks, appliances, mistakes)
  • Symmetry / Order
  • Intrusive thoughts (harm, sexual, religious)
  • "Just Right" feelings

Who this is for

If you find yourself stuck in loops of worry and ritual that are taking up time (more than an hour a day) and causing significant distress, ERP can help you reclaim your life.

You are stronger than your thoughts

You don't have to be held hostage by your rituals. ERP is challenging, but effective. Let's talk about how to start.
