Making Effective Referrals

Guidelines for primary care providers and agencies on when and how to refer for specialty therapy services.

Educational only. Not a substitute for therapy or supervision.

Efficient referrals rely on clarity: what the client needs, what services are in scope, and how communication will happen during and after the handoff.

Consider sharing:

  • Presenting concerns and relevant history
  • Current supports or services already in place
  • Urgency, safety considerations, or accommodations
  • Preferred contact method for follow-up

Referrals move faster when expectations are explicit. That includes timelines for response, what “fit” looks like, and how updates will be handled if specialty care is not appropriate.

Ready for next steps?

If this resonated, a brief consult can clarify whether therapy or supervision is the right fit.
